Well, you know, tesla coiling is not my day job.  I would characterize my coiling life as the process of acquiring industrial cast offs and making them work somehow.
There's no doubt these metered variac things are of far less quality than the Staco/Superior ones.   They cost less.  You find them at flea markets.  Sometimes people give them to you just to get them out of the garage.  If you put them side by side, you immediately want the Staco/Superior variacs.

No doubt you can get it to work.  If I coiled for a living, or even more seriously than I do now, I would never go near the things.
