"Larger and more expensive than you think" is my experience.  With topload
size, bigger has always been better.  Seriously.  Each time I increased the
topload size, above and beyond what "looks" appropriate, performance
improved.  I believe this is due to lowering the frequency, which forces the
primary inductance to higher and higher values, which reduces spark gap
losses.
