For an inductor core, you will need to make it from thin laminations or bundles wires so that the core doesn't act as a secondary coil with a huge current step-up, which will eat power and cause your core to overheat. It's probably best to get a core from an old transformer and use that. If you take apart a burned-out NST the coils will be wound on a straight bar that can be separated from the rest of the core, and you could use that. At least that was the way they were made when I was a pup, which is ancient history.




Inductors don't burn off power as resistors do, so cooling won't be an
issue unless you have highly resistive wire...
