Re: [TCML] Looking for a 1.8nF 50V (Polypropylene 2%) Cap

Hi---

Try Richardson Electronics for small quantities of these polypropylene caps.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the info. Sometimes I get a bit too strict on adhering specifically to the specifications on finicky projects like these. Especially with my history with 555 timers I'll keep scrounging around and see what I can't find.
Oh, nearly forgot, I managed to grab a TLC555 instead of a LMC555, is there any difference? The part numbers match up, but I'm still unsure...

Thank You,
Brandon

Hi Brandon,

There's nothing sacred about the 1.8nF value. IF you were planning on
using the frequency dial image that Terry provided, it would be a good idea
to use exactly the same components that Terry did, but even then, I would
recommend doing your own dial calibration with a frequency counter, since
audio pot's are not typically high-precision devices. My 10K pot measures
9.38K.

Otherwise, you can use anything remotely close. For the cap. I used a
1600pF 5% mica cap. No reason you couldn't series-parallel whatever you
have in your junk box to achieve something close. For the bi-color LED, I
just used two red LED's back-to-back. Probably the only really important
thing is that the cap be temperature-stable, not ceramic.

Hi Everyone,

I'm working on a copy of Terry's Tesla Coil Tuner
(capturedlightning.org/hot-streamer/TeslaCoils/Misc/TCT/TCT.htm) and
there's this capacitor in the parts list (1.8nF 50V Polypropylene 2%)
and I can't find anyone NOT selling them in bulk... So, I imagine
somebody else had the same problem and actually bought some, lol. Do
we have any of those folks here that are willing to sell me an extra
cap?
That, or does anybody know of some mysterious vender hiding in the
deep dark depths of the internet that's selling them to the general
population? Anything will do really, just as long as I don't have to
go buy a hundred just to use the one and turn around and try to resell
the others, lol.

Thanks List,
Brandon (H. in case the other Brandon decides to chime in :))
