Has a lot to do with the trigger (gate) capacitance I would figure. Other
point is that an SCR only conducts in one direction, thus defeating the
whole idea of a spark gap. Perhaps in some sort of a PWM DC style,
changing the duty cycle of the current pulse into the primary tank
circuit...


What about an SCR connected across the output terminals of a bridge rectifier of suitably fast-switching rectifier diodes of the type used for switch-mode power supplies? That way the SCR will see no reverse voltage, the bridge will have sorted that out. Would that work -or would the combined capacitance of the SCR plus diodes present even more of a problem?
