Re: [TCML] Quick and Cheap Toroid

Hi Brandon,

Although it is more labor-intensive than other methods, and requires a little drafting skill to lay out the curved template, a very neat looking covering can be made by cutting the tape into lunes. These are banana-peel shaped strips, like the paper sections used in making a world globe. () () (). If, for example, a toroid had an OD of 24" and an ID of 16" the ratio is 24/16 = 3/2, so strips would need to be 1.5 times wider at the middle than at the skinny ends. This amount of effort may or may not be worth the effort depending upon your "aesthetic compulsions".

strips go the short way around, I hold the toroid with the central axis
horizontal and the strip position facing up. I stick the middle of the
strip on the "equator" of the toroid and then lay it carefully over the
top and bottom and then carefully stick it down. any wrinkles are then
most likely on the inside of the toroid.

I don't know if a strategy of leaving gaps of (say 3/4") and then going
back over and covering the gaps (a sort of alternating pattern) would
work better or worse than a "each piece covers part of the piece before.

I can tell you that a "spiral" continuous approach where you pass the
roll through the middle is likely to be a disaster.
