The best motors for small to medium size VDG's are, by far, those little sewing machine motors, They have gobs of low end torque, are a brushed motors, can be controlled with a single-pole light dimmer. and cheap. Most sewing machine repair shops have used ones for $5 to $10.

You can wrap tape around the roller to make a crown. All it needs to be
is a bit bigger in the middle than on the sides.
