For broadcasting a signal you want a very low SWR (standing wave ratio).
For producing large sparks you want a very high SWR which does not broadcast
very well --- something we try to avoid.
For more details on SWR just drop into your local library and grab a copy of
"The Radio Amateur's Handbook", especially the older issues which explain
these concepts in detail.
