In the realm of the power levels that are being described here -- 50 
amps at 240 VAC, you should never assume that any critical part will 
fail in a favorable way.  This sort of circuit must be controlled by a 
reliable, well overrated industrial contactor that can be remotely 
controlled in case of an emergency situation, and the breaker driving it 
must also be suitable rated.  

Circuit breakers, switches, and relay contacts have been known to weld 
themselves closed during high amp faults, and you don't want to be 
trying to pull a dryer plug out of the wall when it's carrying 12 
kilowatts of power.
