Thomas --- I have the solution to your 555 problem.  I use an alternistor to
drive the ignition coil (Accel Supercoil or equivalent) to 45 kV.  Contact
me off-list and I can email you the schematic.  Only 5 parts and no 555 to
blow.  Alternistor is a special type of triac designed to switch inductive
loads.
