Dan,
     If you want a mirror finish, use a polishing rouge and felt wheel.  
You can buy these at sears, different colors of compounds give different 
degrees of shininess.  If memory serves me well, you start with black 
(maybe unnecessary since you machined the part), then go to brown, then 
red.  Make sure you clean your felt wheel very well between different 
rouges.  One note however, your brass will only stay really shiny for a 
week or so unless you coat it with something, or never touch it with 
your hands.  If you do not touch it, it will slowly turn dark, if you 
do, you will have brown fingerprints in the next two days.  If you coat 
it with something, (may not be practical depending on how you intend to 
use it) make sure you thoroughly clean any of the wax off left behind by 
the rouge.  Have fun.
