If it does have the diode internally, then that could be causing the 
short if it died.

    This particular oven had an external diode so I guess the capacitor 
really is shorted - trying to find out by email from a guy who doesn't 
always follow instructions is a little hard.  I assume an internal diode 
would be between one terminal and the case?  Save a couple of cents that 
way?
