In most cases, if you go to a neon sign shop, and tell them it's for a
school project, they will give you one free.  Or, at most perhaps charge you
$10 for a used unit.

I also have FREE plans for a small Tesla coil with a 14 inch long spark.
You will have to contact me off-list for the plans.
