Steve,

You are correct there really is no benefit over 2D, I thought about doing it
only to see if the results were inline with the 2D simulation I did, however
the amount of time it ties up the computer running the calculations changed
my mind. I ran a tubular type toroid in 3D and it took 16 hours to complete
and I guess that is why I have not tried it on a full tesla coil.
