It has absolutely nothing to do with the thickness of the wire. If
the primary is wound for 120 volts and the secondary for 12 volts,
beyond that on either winding, the steel core can not be magnetized
any more. It then acts like a short circuit. The voltage rating of
a winding is based on the maximum magnetic field the steel core can
handle. You can't take a 120:12 transformer and put 120 Volts on the
12 volt side and expect to get 1200 volts on the 120 volt side. As
you saw, all you get is smoke.
