You said you have a 1 megOhm resistor in series with the output?  What was
the total voltage rating of the resistor?  If less than say 300 kV on a 300
kV machine the energy will flash over the resistor and totally ignore it.

Also, in a Marx machine, the charging power supply must be disconnected from
the unit prior to firing.  We use a 6 inch gap relay under oil to do this on
our machine.
