Hi ,

about VDG and Chain-tron ( Laddertron , Pelletron ), it must be useful to
take a look on patents:

 Patent 3,469,118 ( Sept 23, 1969 ) Raymond G. Herb and James A. Ferry (
abstracts) :

4 / In the ordinary electrostatic generator, the chargecarrying conveyor
takes the form of an ordinary belt made of insulating material. However, in
the illustrated high voltage generator , the conventional belt-type conveyor is
replaced with the illustrated conveyor having one or more endless members with
a series of conductive pellets mounted thereon. The illustrated pellets are
circular in cross section and are generally cylindrical in shape. Here again,
all surfaces of the pellets are smoothly curved or rounded so as to minimize
the possibility of sparking or corona discharges between the pellets.

In the construction the pellets are strung onto and secured to a flexible
cord or tension member which may comprise one or more strands of flexible
insulating material. Preferably the cord comprises a large number of twisted
strands of nylon or similar material. Each pellet is formed with an axial bore
to receive the cord . Each of the illustrated pellets also has a bore of small
diameter extending diametrically to receive therethrougti a pin which extends
diametrically through the cord so as to secure the pellet to the cord. The
pin may be tapered and may be press-fitted into the bore so that the pin will
be securely retained therein.

The cord may also be tightly fitted within the bore in each pellet so
that the pellet will be frictionally retained on the cord. An extremely tight
fit may be obtained by stringing the pellets on the cord while the cord is
loosely twisted or entirely untwisted. After all of the pellets have been mounted
on the cord, the cord may be tightly twisted. This has the effect of
increasing the diameter of the cord while shortening its length. The cord may thus be
expanded in diameter to fit very tightly within the bore of each pellet . /... /

(I notice it was an old design of the chain)
