One also has to remember the Pelletron chain is operated in several atm of
SF6 gas. Operation in open air is very poor for height to spark output
considerations.

I know of an air-insulated machine at Univ. of Wis. that is used for physics
demonstrations. Since it is an air insulated machine it stands over 6 feet
tall and only puts out an anemic 10 inch spark at approx 200 kV. Not
exactly what you want to see if your interest is in big sparks. My belt
driven machines put out 3 times that spark length in air.

The conductive nature of the Pelletron chain usually restricts them to
insulated tank operation. Operating a long belt with conductive links in
air works but produces very poor sparks.

Of course, sparks are detrimental to VDGRF's in insulated tanks. Corona
losses and sparks produce very poor voltage regulation for high energy
physics experiments.
