Hi everyone,

Just some info to add to the discussion, on my two small commercial
units the top plates are metal while the bottom plate sectors are
plated on a pc board.  One design note is that you don't necessarily
have to use disks at all.  The idea is of course to shield and
unshield some sort of sensor, but there can be different geometries.
Here is a very interesting PDF on different types of instrumentation
for measuring atmospheric fields.  One of the illustrations shows a
sort of barrel shaped field mill:
