My friend and I have set up our Tesla coil each Halloween for the past 5 
years, without any problems.  (4 foot discharges)  It is set up on the 
driveway, with a yellow "caution" tape to keep spectators at a distance.  It 
is fired up for 5 to 10 seconds at a time.  It really scares some of the 
kids.  It is part of our haunted house display, which also includes a 
Jacob's ladder, 100 pound fire breathing pumpkin, 10 foot fire balls from 
the chimney, live organ music, lightning (strobe) and loud thunder, etc.
