More thoughts on bumping.  I strongly suspect at least one of
the phenomena taking place is some sort of parametric oscillation
cause by changes in magnetizing inductance due to saturation effects,
and that the series resistors may well overcome the negative 
resistance effects associated with the oscillation.  You can
observe similar effects with only saturable (or more or less
saturable) inductors and capacitors connected as series circuits
across the power line.  In the "good old days" some telephone
ringing circuit generators (20 cycle) were made from parametric
oscillators using capacitors and iron core inductors.
