RE: Primary Coil Design

Jeff,

Tesla coil primary goings on are little understood by the general Tesla
populace. If one uses a low inductance (few turn primary) then the lead
length is hyper-critical. A significant fraction of off axis inductance
will reduce your coupling and lose energy needlessly. Also, a close
proximity to the primary by any metallic components, Gaps, wires, etc. will
cause heating by simple induction. More wasted energy.

Spread your components out a bit, Try to avoid placing components under the
primary coil. With a larger primary (more turns), the off axis inductance
would not be so bad, even with moderately long leads. This, of course, does
not give one license to get sloppy in lead dress or placement.
