synch. motors

Chip -

Be glad to:

Just figured out the details myself. It involves inspecting the
windings on the stator - there will be several 'dead' poles without
windings. On a 1750 RPM motor, there should be three of them. (3 poles,
and four 'holes' without windings.) A 3450 RPM motor should only have
2 dead poles and 3 'holes'. You want to mill a flat surface on the
armature that extends across the dead poles and 1/2 way into the 'live'
poles at either end. For a 1750 RPM motor, there will be four flats
cut into the armature to match the four magnetic poles in the stator.
A 3450 RPM motor only has two poles, so the armature will have only
2 flats cut into it.

I plan to draw some diagrams and illustrations on this, possibly
with close-up photos as well which will be posted on the FUNET server.
Meanwhile, I hope this helps you out.
