I just found this interesting site. Included is a page on a Marx
Generator, for producing (very) high voltage pulses:

http://hibp.ecse.rpi.edu/~chowm/marx.html

It basically charges a bank of capacitors in parallel at lower voltage
through inductors (at low frequency) and then uses spark gaps to "rewire"
the circuit as capacitors in series. The inductors prevent the pulses from
shorting the capacitors so the voltages on the capacitors add up. They
claim to have achieved voltages over two and a half million at large
amperages this way.

Has anyone tried one of these for a Tesla coil? I wonder what its ring
characteristics would be.
