On a small Tesla Coil if you double your input power the output appears
to
double also. This is a non linear increase. If your getting 12" sparks
from 500 watts and increase to 1000 watts your output will increase to
about 20" to 24" which is about double. If your getting 24" sparks from
1000 watts and increase to 5000 watts you would expect to get 24" x 5 =
120"
sparks but your output will be much less, maybe 7' or 8'.

If you change nothing but the power supply you may get arc over between
the
primary and secondary coils. This may burn a spot on your secondary and
the
high voltage feed back into the primary can go into the transformer and
fry
it. Chokes on the transformer help to protect your transformers from
high
voltage feed back. Safety gaps are good protection also.

>>2. What increase in discharge length could I expect by changing only the
>>primary tap location?

Once you find resonance frequency your discharge length will be the best
you
can expect for the system you are using. If your Tesla Coil has a wide
band
width moving the tap a few inches won't make much difference. If your
Tesla
Coil has a narrow band width moving the tap a few inches can make a big
difference.

>>primary tap location in conjuction with using a larger torroid?

If you have your primary tapped at the correct location using a small
toroid
then change it to a large toroid your primary will have to be retapped
to
find the new resonance frequency. After you find the new resonance
frequency your system will be performing best once again. The larger
toroid
will usually give longer and hotter discharge sparks.
