spar varnish won't work because it requires air to dry - the internal
layers 
will remain wet forever, and outgassing of the solvent will cause
bubbles.  
Suggest using a 2 part epoxy resin if you want to do this - some resins
are 
relatively soft and compliant.  Otherwise, if you want a dry capacitor,
what's 
wrong with parafin wax - once it cools you can move it around no problem
- 
follow your procedure, except use parafin instead of spar varnish (and
be 
careful not to burn yourself), and keep the assembly warm until done,
then let 
it cool overnight.  Tar and silicone grease would also work, I would
think, 
don't know about regular old axle grease due to it's soap content.
