Moody Bible Inst. Tesla Coil - An Update

-- BEGIN included message

Hi everyone!

Just for the heck of it, I E-mailed the Moody Bible Institute over the
weekend asking about the Million Volt demo's they used to do... turns
out they STILL are doing them, but with more modern equipment. I'm
enclosing part of the response I received today from from Timothy Wise.
This was really an awe-inspiring show - I saw it when I was 12 years
old. It'd probably be awe-inspiring today as well... even if they are
using an "Oudin" resonator instead of a Tesla resonator... :^)

Hmmm... Brent, ever think about joining the ministry? :^)

Safe coilin' to you!

Dear Mr. Hickman:

Thank you for your interest in Sermons from Science. Your memory does
serve you correctly, Dr. George Speake presented the Sermons from
Science programs at the time you saw them.

The programs continue in existence today with Dean Ortner doing the
presentations. We continue to do the Million Volt Demonstration, though
new equipment is in use since you saw the programs.

While the programs will not be in Milwaukee in the near future, we do
have them scheduled for Medford, up near Green Bay, for October 5-8,
1997.

In the near future we will be launching the first phase of the Sermons
from Science web site located at www.moody.edu/sfs.

I have attached some additional information about Sermons from Science,
and would be happy to discuss things further should you be interested.

Thanks again for your interest.

In His Service,

Timothy R. Wise

INTRODUCING SERMONS FROM SCIENCE

What is Sermons from Science?

Sermons from Science is a series of four 90-minute live presentations
using scientific demonstrations to illustrate spiritual and biblical
principles. Presented on consecutive evenings, each program differs from
the others. The series is low-key but strongly evangelistic. Audience
participation, humor, and mind-boggling science demonstrations
supplement the down-to-earth presentation of scientific principles.
Applications drawn from these principles show the existence of an
intelligent Creator and the claim He has on individual lives.

Due to the time commitment required to set up and take down the
equipment
(six hours up, two down), we are unable to do less than the entire
series. Sometimes we stretch the series to five or six days of 60-minute
programs, occasionally we do four programs in three days.

The "trade mark" of Sermons from Science involves a demonstration where
our scientist stands on an Oudin Resonator and allows one million volts
and several amps of electricity to pass through his body and ignite a
board held in his hands (this is not static electricity). Additional
information outlining the series program by program is listed below.

Is this new? How long have you been doing these programs?

Sermons from Science began more than 50 years ago when the concept of
using science to illustrate the gospel was used by California pastor
Irwin Moon. His sermons became so popular, he eventually left the
pastorate to devote himself full-time to his Sermons from Science.
Following World War II, Dr. Moon began to use the Sermons from Science
principle in the making of motion pictures. The result became the
world-famous Moody Institute of Science films. While the films spread
around the world, the live presentations continued to be presented
across the continental U.S., Canada, Alaska, and occasionally overseas.

Sermons from Science was presented at World's Fairs in San Francisco,
Seattle, New York, Montreal, and Spokane. Of the 700 exhibits at the
New
York World's Fair, Time magazine selected Sermons from Science as one of
the best in a listing of their choice for the top 20 attractions. In
Montreal, it ranked in the top five attractions for capacity crowds, and
by special request from the mayor of Montreal, it remained open after
the fair closed, becoming the only pavilion to reach the milestone of
opening its doors 10,000 times.

The combination of films and live demonstrations were used in
evangelistic projects at the Munich , Montreal and Atlanta Olympic
games. The live Sermons from Science programs have been presented before
more than 5.5 million people, visited more than 600 military bases
(including each service academy and Camp David), and have been used in
hundreds of communities through local Christian organizations.

Is Sermons from Science appropriate for our setting?

Sermons from Science has been used in a very real way to strengthen the
faith of Christians and help young people see the existence of a Creator
behind this universe. However, Sermons from Science is a ministry of
evangelism and each of the four programs contains the gospel message.
While Sermons from Science does edify, educate, and entertain
Christians, it is designed to reach lost men and women for Jesus
Christ. The unique medium of science attracts people with a scientific
mind who might never set foot inside of a church. The goal and mission
of Sermons from Science is evangelism.

When Sermons from Science is presented to a predominately Christian
audience, such as a Bible conference, it is for the purpose of exposing
Christians to our ministry that we might obtain a broader base of prayer
and financial support.

For these reasons, Sermons from Science presents an evangelistic series
rather than an inspirational series. This is one of the reasons that we
strive to present approximately 50% of our programs each year on
military
bases or university campuses. Sermons from Science is an appropriate
program for any chapel, church or para-church ministry seeking an
outreach to the community.

How much does Sermons from Science cost?

A question and answer sheet covering finances is available upon
request. If you have further questions. feel free to contact the
sermons from Science office. A special program exists for assisting
military chaplains in bringing Sermons from Science to their base.
Chaplains interested in a video introduction to Sermons from Science
should submit their request to Sermons from Science at the attached
address or e-mail at sfs-at-moody.edu and enclose their rank and office
mailing address.
