Not shorting.  SHUNTING.  Note that, insofar as capacitor chargin
is concerned, the secondary circuit is series resonant and that
the voltage can rise (to several times rated value if insulation
doesn't break down first) when the capacitor is connected.  I
suspect this is frequently the real cause of transformer failure
when the "gap is opened up" to increase output.
