Subject: Transformer Protection?

I have just built a HV power supply out of a 12V engine ignition coil. I
haven't fired it yet however, because I think it may blow when the arc
is created as it has no protection against short circuiting which will
happen when the arc is made across the spark gap. I remember reading
somewhere that you could put a light bulb in the circuit to protect the
transormer against this. Does anyone have any more info on this? Maybe a
circuit diagram?
