Malcolm,

Did you try higher break-rates (or lower) such as <1 BPS or 20 BPS,
if so, were there any other rates that gave unexpected spark length
increases?   It would be interesting to make a chart of spark lengths
from minimum to max BPS and see what kind of curve is obtained.
