I can only theorize abut your question of why the gap oscillates at 50
Probably no mystery at all. The leads act as resonant lines,
exactly as in some of Hertz's pioneering work with electomagnetic
waves, almost exactly 110 years ago.
A lot of his work was done at a wavelength of about 6 meters
(frequency about 50 MHz) by coincidence.
