Your curiousity, whether thoughtful or not, was pregnant with
posibilities.  The full story might not follow normal reasoning due to a
number of other factors.  Arc dynamics, for instance, might like the
second and third notches just fine as once the main pop launches the arc,
the add on, even if nasty and lossey from the elegance of the tesla
engine viewpoint, might just rocket along the old channel extending it a
bit.  (Might have nothing to do with the reduced Q and terminal
potential.)  Where this starts to be detrimental is related to a lot of
variables yet to be considered or perhaps even recognized.
