Another unlikely source is old medical supply houses that are found in
most communities. They sometimes have medical sump pumps that pull a
reasonable
vacuum (no way will they pull a hard vacuum though.) As the appearance
of these devices deteriorates their utility to the medical environment
decreases rapidly.
 Since aesthetics usually isn't a concern for hobbyists, (barring of
course the
grossness factor) they can be a real bargain. The guts of these systems
(no pun intended) have barely had a workout, rarely will they ever have
been expected to pull much below 50 torr, in spite of their ability to
pull down to
below 1 torr if driven.

Also, they will rarely have been exposed to any real  serious caustics
or solvents.
This combination is otherwise difficult to come by in the surplus arena.
