larger wire for a smaller coil

I have a four an a half inch diameter pvc pipe about three and a half 
feet long. I got a bunch of wire that looks to be about an 
18 guage.  Seeing as this is to thick, could I compinsate by having a 
longer winding length.  I know sec. Q will suffer from a long, narrow 
coil form, but is this still the case if I use thicker wire and aim for 
as many wraps as I could get? That would still be a low number, around 
750. Is this acceptible?  Finding a new coilform shoudnt be a big deel, 
but if I have to buy wire how much should I expect to pay?
