Subject:  Magnifyer Coil Question

I'm interested in building a coil with a magnifyer type tank design.

Will I need a rotary gap to achieve this well?
I haven't been able to find much info on the 'third coil'
on the magnifyer circuit, what purpose does it serve exactly and
just how is it physically positioned?
BTW: Did tesla use a magnifyer type coil during his experiments with
wireless power? (That would be neat novelty application for my coil.)
