  Robert -

  You said that you did not wish to "waste further effort" on this subject
and I agree. However, why did you introduce a new subject "photons" that can
extend the thread and has little to do with Tesla coils. Mr. Tesla spent
many years trying to point out that his resonant air core transformer (Tesla
coil) did not use Hertzian waves which are photons of energy. This is
another story.

  Point #1 -

  Richard Hull's demonstration that you referred to relates to capacitors
and not to toroids on a Tesla coil. He also made different tests on the
terminal charge of an operating coil (see below). Another story.

  The air surrounding the topload does get charged but as an electric field
and can be easily tested with an electroscope, electrostatic voltmeter, etc.
Another story.

  Point #2 -

  Note that a capacitively coupled probe will not detect a static charge
from the sphere of a Van de Graaff generator as you suggest. However, it
will detect the moving charges (coulombs) coming from the sphere as
currents. Another story.  

  I was not referring to "changing voltage level" but rather to static
conditions. Changing voltages and currents do pass thru capacitors. Another
story.

  I agree that if there is no "waveform activity" there will be a long
silence between bangs on the scope. Also, if there is a static charge
present there will be nothing shown on the scope to indicate this with a
capacitively coupled probe.

  Tesla said there was a negative charge at the secondary terminal of an
operating coil because the RF wave was not symmetrical. Richard Hull's tests
showed there was a positive charge but this is incorrect. The tests I made
showed a negative charge using the correct test method. Another story.

  It is obvious that there is still a lot about Tesla coil operation that
coilers do not agree on or understand.
