I too had no luck with those "5kv 300ma" xformers. The only plus 
about them is that all the Es and Is are in separate stacks so its easy 
to take them apart. I band sawed the windings off and wound my own. Now I 
have 2- 8kv 200ma (w/o ballasting) straight xformers that power my coil 
with ease.
