I was mistaken.  The book was written in 1949.  There was "radar" before
WWII, but it was very primitive. In fact Bell Telephone labs began
actively developing radar in 1938.

As for the book it describes many diff. spark gap tubes 1B22,1B29,1b42.
Also a schematic for a iron sponge mercury cathode , and Molybdenum anode 
gap. This gap is place in a Argon-Hydrogen atmosphere.
