I'll let someone else provide a detailed description.  However if you want
to have a look inside one, I have some photos on my web site in the Tesla
coil section (URL below).  This is the unit that failed last Fall.  I still
haven't had time to autopsy it.   Maybe later this Fall.

P.S.   Seems like a lot of people are suddenly rushing to get pigs.  Don't
forget that your expenses will rise substantially with the addition of
current limiter, 240v variac, contactors, rotary, etc.  All of this takes a
lot of space too!  These are not like neon systems.  As has been discussed
recently, the danger factor goes way up too.
