Guys.. perhaps you're making this harder than it needs to be. Use a 120->3/5V transformer. Connect a large LED across the output. Said LED will light for 1/2 cycle, yes? (0r at least where the voltage exceeds the breakdown of 0.7?) Or for that matter, just an NE-2 with a dropping resistor?
