one place the 12% difference really matters is with incadescent lights - the
bulb life/rated life=(rated volts/volts) ^13  (yes, that is really the 13th
power - a small increase in voltage dramatically affects bulb life - that's
why 220 volt bulbs last virtually forever at 110, and why a 6V headlamp
fails in a second or so at 12 v)
