New 12kv/60ma neon sign transformers are quite expensive--over $100 retail.
 I've seen used ones advertised for as little as $20.

You can protect your leyden jar with a parallel spark gap that breaks down
before the wall of the jar does.  Sounds very snappy!

You could build tougher Leyden jars with beer bottles or champagne bottles
(strong, uniform glass due to the pressure).  The 12kv may still puncture
them if you don't use a spark gap.
