Spend some time printing out and studying the excellent "Tesla Coil
Archives" section under Tesla List.  It will answer most of your questions.

The primary isn't connected electrically to the secondary coil.  The energy
transfer occurs via the invisible magnetic field from the primary to the
secondary coil.  On a smaller coil the bottom of the secondary coil is
grounded with a 6 AWG wire and should be connected directly to a good
external ground with a copper ground rod driven into the earth.  The
connection is made via 6 AWG finely stranded welding cable (from welding
supply shop).
