RE: simple questions

Hi Trent. I'm not an expert, but here's what I've observed and what I can
speculate.
Everybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here :)

Hello All,

The distance between the gaps should be spaced as equally as possible te
keep the breakdown voltage the same across the whole gap assembly. This
should help it stay cooler, and provide better quenching. I don't believe a
few thousandths of an inch will make much difference (unless you're on the
ragged edge), but keeping them all about the same gap spacing is a good idea
for the breakdown voltage. Closely spaced electrodes will fire sooner and
probably rob some power from the cap. Plus IMHO a nice even-spaced gap just
looks cooler :)

>2. What size variac contoller is advisable for a system with a 15kV 120mA
>supply? How do you calculate that size?

I do not know the calculations for that. My 12kv120ma bank draws about 11
amps peak (or so my meter sez), so I'm looking for at least a 15-20 amp
variac (120v). 240v&more amps if I can find it, so I have room to grow.

>3. Do NST's in parallel need to have the cases connected? (I read that
they

3. I always hook mine up case-to-case, and make sure that the 3rd wire from
the plug is the ground (for the NSTS' cases.) That way if you blow a neon,
and it shorts to the case, it's leeched off to ground, instead of floating
the case high -at- however-many-volts the NSTs are at. That would *not* be fun
to touch.

>4. Can line filters be run in parallel to increase the rating?

Don't know. I'me got some 12amp line filters that I haven't had time to
try that with. I do reccomend using PFC caps for the NST's. I tried them,
and the amp draw fell down what seemed quite a bit (took the cord running it
a lot longer to get warm.)Haven't measured the drop, but I will.

Hope it helps, and if I'm wrong, feel free to tell me so :)

Sundog - No matter how bad it is, it can and will get worse..10 minutes
before you're supposed to go home. So smile and be glad all the time. Enjoy
it before it *DOES* get worse. -
