Alex,
    This has been tried before by Julian Green at the first UK teslathon. It
made one heck of a noise!. I wouldn't try it with your one remaining obit
though. It will probably kill it to from the kickback.. He was using a 5 kva
pig. I think dc coils work quite well with async gaps. John Freau has done a
lot of work in this area. If you look in the archives under async rotaries
you should find something.
