Malcolm, all,

That's a good point about the extra weight and cost of thick wire,
and how any possible benefit is kicked in the teeth by the
proximity effect in a close wound coil.

In a similar vein, I was amazed by the (heavy) weight of my 6" by 24"
secondary after I rewound it with 20awg wire.  It had been wound
with 28awg previously.  The 28 wire not only was a lot lighter, but
gave me 10% longer sparks too.  My coils were both close 
wound though.  I use a central post to hold my secondaries which
lets me raise or lower them easily, but I can tell you that using the
heavy 20awg wire, the secondary threatened to sway precariously
from the weight    :)
