Re: alternative materials for RSG electrodes?

on that fateful day 8/16/00 8:10 AM, Tesla list uttered:

Never tried it, might work.

My recommendation is to set up a robust primary circuit, a static gap
(perhaps air cooled), and then try two bolts of various materials. You'll
probably learn more than if you just accepted someone else's word.

Titanium is nice where you need high strength and low weight, such the SR-71
Blackbird. However, it burns very nicely and its melting point is much
lower than Tungsten, and its thermal conductivity is quite poor compared to
other materials. I've never had the guts to try it, but I suspect that
using titanium in a gap would result in a spectacular pyrotechnic display.

Monel (K) also has poor thermal conductivity, but a higher melting point
than copper.

Tungsten tips, copper holders. Frankly, since the losses are in the gap,
not the electrodes, choice of electrode material is for durability, not
performance. You can use steel bolts if you want.
