  I dunno if you're *overquenching* it.  My guess is with the
bigger cap you're taking longer to charge it, because you've
increased the capacitance and kept the charging current the same.
Cap takes longer to charge, means longer wait for the voltage to
build up to the firing point, means the gap resistance goes up (due
to the cap taking longer to charge), so a bigger bang.  The sparks
and gap would sound raggedy because of the delay.  Maybe try
closing up the gap a little bit, or an srsg?  How much gap are you
running now?
