There are devices made for testing grounds.  I think they are called 
"meggers" and apply a voltage to your ground and using metal stakes placed 
several feet away a voltage difference can be read and the ground's 
resistance can be estimated.  Being that they are not something you would see 
every day, you might get a better idea from others on the list.
