Starting point is obviously a better gap. Next thing is to build a 
decent capacitor (MMC) if you can afford it. You won't be 
disappointed if you do it properly.  Next thing is a larger topload 
(along with which will be needed more primary capacitance and/or 
primary turns to maintain tune).
